Lulu's experiences - The zip line The great leap over the mountains

This week, I’m continuing my adventures with the zip line at the Prabouré mountain activity park, run by François Philibert.

This is no ordinary zip-line, as it is the highest in the Massif Central.

110 metres high to be precise.

A zip line reaching 80 km/h

This summer, I mingle with the summer camps at Prabouré. I’m immersed in the midst of all these children, who are almost my size, or bigger. It’s hard to tell them apart, and I’m told that a bus of a hundred children is on its way. I waste no time in getting my harness on.

The Prabouré activity park is very popular with vacation camps and offers a wide range of activities.

The suspense is at its height

I wait in front of the zip line, where I suddenly see the void. The void doesn’t scare me, but I have to admit it’s not very reassuring either. I approach.

A dozen children in single file are waiting to pass, more or less excited. It’s funny to watch everyone’s reactions. Some of them can’t stand still, and once they’re in front of the zip line, you can hear them screaming with delight. There’s one girl, a little shorter than the others, who bursts into tears once she’s hooked onto the zip-line. She’s so scared she’s not going to jump after all.

Nothing could be further from the truth; I play out a whole catastrophic scenario in my head. But when it’s my turn, I’m grinning from ear to ear. And I can’t wait. I’m hooked up to the zip line and sit in my harness, my feet up against the metal structure in front of me. I listen attentively to the few instructions I’m given. Then I jump.

Before the leap to infinity, and beyond

A very quick jump from the start, when I hear the wind ringing in my ears and my scream echoing through the valley. I laugh nervously as I see the trees beneath my feet and the magnificent view around me.

It’s a real feeling of freedom to soar through the air, and it’s impressive to pick up so much speed in a matter of seconds. I cover a distance of around 800 metres and seem to have reached a maximum speed of 55 kph.

Enough to take a deep breath. I can’t believe the view, and my legs are shaking with fear and excitement. By the time I reach the bottom of the zip line, when I’m untied, I’m still laughing. At least I arrived with a smile on my face.

Something for everyone Those wearing helmets continue on the via ferrata after the zip line

The people before and after me are wearing helmets. They’ll be following the rando-ferrata route. You can also make the ascent on foot, which takes about twenty minutes. Or, like me, you can wait to be picked up by car.
